This is a beauty of a landscape project that we did in Mira Bay Apollo Beach, Fl. Our landscape customer counted on us to design and install something they would enjoy coming home to for years to come, and we were successful! This a Pindo Palm (Butia capitata, Jelly Palm) that we installed for one of our landscape customers in the Tampa, fl area. The Pindo Palm (Butia capitata, Jelly Palm) is a drought tolerant palm preferring sandy well drained soil and one of the cold hardy palms which can tolerate the temperatures of USDA Hardiness zones 8-9. The Pindo Palm (Butia capitata, Jelly Palm) is not recommended for subtropical and tropical climates. The Pindo palm produces bright orange fruit (often called pindo dates in the Deep South)that some people make a tasty jelly out of, hence the name "Jelly Palm". This was a landscape installation done for one of our landscape customers in Apollo Beach, Fl. The customer was thrilled with this gorgeous Dioon spinulosum that we installed for him. The Dioon spinulosum is fast growing for a cycad. It prefers a subtropical or tropical climate, and partial shade or filtered sun. It handles moisture and humidity better than most cycads, but must be kept in well-draining soil like nearly all cycads. It is hardy down to the mid-low 20s F.
